Photograph of George by Paul Saltzman

This beautiful photo of George in Rishikesh 1968 has been very kind loaned to us by Paul - please do not abuse his generosity by pirating it - please see his amazing photographic collection on www.TheBeatlesInIndia.com
Paul always acknowledges that George had a huge influence on his life with "simply words and deeply loving philosophy".

29 November 2011 - TEN YEARS ON LIVERPOOL REMEMBERS GEORGE

Picture

At The Town Hall, scene of The Beatles triumphant return to Liverpool in 1964 on the occasion of the Northern Premiere of
"A Hard Days Night" the Union Jack flew at half mast, paying
respect to her beloved son George with the kind permission of the Lord Mayor's Office.

As George loved flowers the railings were decorated with
blooms for the day.

George's fans watched silently as thousands of rose petals, musical notes, butterflies and little paper doves cascaded from Dulverton Bridge in honour of George ...

The Doors opened at 1.30 pm and fans streamed in to fill the Concert Room at St. George's Hall for The Free Concert For George

George's portrait stood at Centre Stage with 10 red roses to mark the 10 years of his passing. The incense was lit and the Concert was ready to begin...

In the presence of The Lord Mayor of Liverpool.

From the very start the audience were aware that this was no ordinary Tribute Concert... Edited by Grace Williams

Tsema

George always maintained a tune could be whatever it wanted to be... Tsema stunned the audience with a haunting hymn, generally considered to be one of the greatest rock classics - While My Guitar Gently Weeps -
a capella.

The Rebels

Picture
Formed for this one day only...
The Rebels performed their interpretations of  some of the tunes which inspired George himself: Raunchy, Youngblood, 3 Cool Cats, Do You Want to Know a Secret, Baltimore Oriole, Take Good Care of My Baby and Got My Mind Set on You.

Joined by Jeff Slate for "If Not For
You".

A beautiful East West blend - George's three "Indian" Beatle tunes...

             The Inner Light
      Within You Without You
               Love You To

       A true accomplishment.

Picture

Singh Strings brought the house down with a classical raga from North India

They acknowledged that Indian music would not have enjoyed the popularity it does in the West if George had not been so passionate about it. Sorry we don't have better footage. If you look at the evening concert at the Cavern you will find some there too.

Not generally known is the fact that George loved Bulgarian voice music. In 1987 he was spellbound by "Balkana" at the Royal Festival Hall and he went backstage to meet the Artistes. He bought armfuls of cd's to give to his friends.

For one performance only Tsema performed a sad folk tune about a young girl who had been abducted from her home - from the very cd that George would have listened to -
a capella.

The Liverpool Ukelele Orchestra

Picture
George loved the ukelele! And the audience loved all 12 of these just as we knew they would!

In Spite of all the Danger
Piggies
Leaning on a Lamp Post
Devil and the Deep Blue Sea
See You in My Dreams....

brought the first half of the Concert to a close.

The Mersey Beatles

Merseyside's  best loved Beatle Tribute Band played a storming set of some of George's best loved Beatle Classics...

Signed to Apple by GeorgIn 1969 the RKT enjoyed a no 1 hit in Germany with the Hare Krishna Mantra. This year, instead of holding their customary Evening of Remembrance for George they travelled to his hometown to chant for him and enchant Liverpool.

Jeff Slate

Jeff paid his own way to be with us - his set was a very special Tribute to "All Things Must Pass" - George's incomparable Solo album. He was accompanied by Tim Croston of the Rebels...

        "Hear Me Lord"

an amazing performance with backing from Jeff and Tim..........................

Andre Barreau

Picture
Andre is the "George" in tThe Bootleg Beatles - we could never afford him in a million years. So it was very lucky for us that he loves George and came played for us for free, inbetween two busy tours. He had met George, who had seen The Bootleg Beatles  play, and had a long conversation with him. He played a heart felt Tribute to the man who meant so much to him with a selection of tunes from George's Solo years as an Artiste:
Give Me Love Give Me Peace on Earth, Not Guilty, While My Guitar Gently Weeps, Isn't It a Pity/
I Need You, Handle With Care and My Sweet Lord.

FINALE - A JOYOUS RENDITION OF MY SWEET LORD

This amazing Concert was FREE - thanks to the kind support of Bill Heckle at Cavern City Tours who also roped in Liverpool City Council. We had the room booked since 2009 but ran up against all sorts of obstacles until Bill came on board so George fans everywhere owe him a huge debt of thanks. THANK YOU BILL.

But it was not over yet....

Not only did the Audience get to enjoy the Free Concert - but they also had tasty "Prashadam" afterwards supplied courtesy of the Hare Krishna Charity "Food For All UK".

George was very partial to "prashadam" so it was a very fitting way to end the festivities at St. George's Hall. Thank you to the Hare Krishnas...
